Homeowners gain medical debt lien protection

Beginning October 1, 2025, Maryland bans liens created by contract or contract breach to collect medical debt against owner-occupied homes. A home qualifies when an owner uses at least one unit as their primary residence. Courts must remove liens that break this rule, but the debt is not canceled. Covered debt is owed to businesses mainly providing medical services, products, or devices, or their agents or debt buyers. Credit-card debt counts only when the card plan is solely for health care. Money-judgment complaints must identify whether the debt is medical and, if so, include the defendant’s primary-home address. The law does not affect complaints filed before October 1, 2025.
