Loan help expands for part-time dental professionals

Beginning July 1, 2025, Maryland Dent-Care loan assistance includes part-time dentists and dental hygienists, alongside full-time workers. Applicants must hold a Maryland dental board license, show financial need, and meet any additional program criteria. At least 30% of patients must receive Maryland Medicaid—measured for the dentist or the practice where the hygienist works. Recipients must keep working and maintain that patient share to keep their grants. For awards on or after October 1, 2023, the law sets dentist grants at least $50,000 yearly for three years. Dental hygienist grants cannot exceed $10,000 yearly for two years. The Office of Student Financial Assistance and Maryland Department of Health must set prorated part-time amounts; no formula is specified. They must also set annual and total participant limits through regulations and periodically review grant amounts.
