Maryland adults gain hearing aid coverage

Beginning January 1, 2026, Maryland-regulated health insurers, nonprofit health plans, and health maintenance organizations must cover medically needed, nondisposable hearing aids for adults. This applies to policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after that date. A licensed audiologist must prescribe, fit, and dispense the aid, or a licensed hearing aid dispenser must order, fit, and dispense it. Plans may limit benefits to $1,400 per hearing aid for each hearing-impaired ear every 36 months, but can offer more. You can pay the difference for a more expensive aid without financial or contract penalties to the provider.
