Private colleges gain hunger-free campus status

Beginning July 1, 2025, qualifying Maryland private colleges and regional centers run by private institutions can earn hunger-free campus status. Campuses must have a hunger task force, help students access SNAP food benefits, and offer a pantry or stigma-free alternative. They must also hold hunger-awareness activities, survey students each year, and report their efforts. Four-year campuses must provide SNAP retailer access or information and, where applicable, a program for donating unused meal credits. Two-year campuses are exempt from those two requirements. The designation does not guarantee benefits for individual students.

Private colleges lose campus hunger grants

Beginning July 1, 2025, private two-year and four-year colleges cannot receive Hunger-Free Campus grants, even with hunger-free status. Regional centers run by private nonprofit colleges are also excluded. Public colleges and eligible regional centers remain eligible only with hunger-free status and a pledge of matching funds.
