Maryland Medicaid covers ABA by technicians

Beginning October 1, 2026, Maryland Medicaid pays for applied behavior analysis (ABA) by behavior technicians for people with autism. The Department cannot require a recognized certification to pay these claims at the start. But it may require the technician to get and keep that certification within 150 days after starting services. The Department must write rules to carry this out. The law applies only to services on or after October 1, 2026. It does not set payment rates.

Changes end if federal law conflicts

Beginning October 1, 2026, these changes take effect. If the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says in writing by June 30, 2027 that this law conflicts with federal Medicaid rules, the law ends. The Maryland Department of Health must tell the Department of Legislative Services within 5 days after getting that notice.
