Equal pay for Maryland school sports officials

Beginning July 1, 2025, Maryland county school boards must ensure equal pay for officials in similar roles in state-designated similar sports. This covers officials working directly for schools or through contractors and officiating groups. Boards must reject bids that create unequal pay or fees for those roles. They must seek bids for each sport within a reasonable time of bids for the other sports in its group. The education department must list similar boys’ and girls’ sports by September 1, 2025, and update the list every three years. It must consult the state school athletic association and consider seasons, rules, number of officials, services, and competition lengths. The department may also issue guidance and added criteria. Equal pay applies within each county, not across counties, and does not cover non-pay matters. Bonuses outside service contracts remain allowed, and the law sets no dollar amounts.

Schools can extend existing sports officiating contracts

Beginning July 1, 2025, local school systems may extend sports officiating contracts signed on or before that date. Extensions must align contract timelines for similar boys’ and girls’ sports and cannot run past July 1, 2029. Apart from this extension rule, the law applies going forward and does not cover contracts entered into before July 1, 2025.
