Private businesses can get liquor licenses for restaurants or hotels on university or college land, if key rules are met. Land must be leased at fair market value, and sites must sit in areas the board set for industrial, research, or commercial use. CMU allows a hotel license inside its development park. Wayne State and Western Michigan allow restaurant licenses in their designated development areas. EMU allows restaurant licenses there too, but the license must have been first bought on the open market at fair market value. Schoolcraft allows a restaurant license in or next to the college grocery store, run by the same private entity, in a board‑designated development area. These licenses follow normal local quota limits.
Some college boards can hold liquor licenses for on‑campus venues. NMU and LSSU can license on‑site restaurants or premises in areas set for community development or conference use, if the license was first bought on the open market at fair market value. Macomb, Wayne County CC, Washtenaw CC, and Henry Ford College can license named buildings if the license was first bought at fair market value. Colleges that own or run golf course clubhouses can also license the clubhouse and nearby outdoor areas. These licenses follow normal local quota limits.
Colleges and universities can get a license to sell alcohol at their conference centers. The license is not limited by local quota rules. Sales are only allowed at regularly scheduled conference events, not to walk‑in patrons. These conference center licenses cannot be transferred to another owner. All licenses issued under this section must pay the state’s standard license fee. The law defines which schools and facilities count as a college and a conference center.
Private operators can get a liquor license for baseball stadiums on EMU and Oakland University land during the summer break. The stadium and adjacent outdoor service area must be leased at fair market value. Sales are allowed only between the end of spring term and the start of fall term. These licenses follow normal local quota limits.
