Patients can take leftover eye medicine
Michigan hospitals and freestanding surgical outpatient facilities must offer qualifying patients leftover eye drops or eye ointment at discharge. The facility must have ordered the medicine for the patient's inpatient eye procedure or medical care and administered it there. The leftover medicine must be needed for continued treatment; compounded drugs are excluded. A dispensing pharmacist must ensure the container meets the labeling rules that apply when prescribers dispense medicine. The prescriber must explain how to use the medicine. A pharmacist who dispenses it is exempt from pharmacist counseling requirements.
