Optional firearm safety classes for grades 6–12

Local schools may offer a voluntary firearm safety class for grades 6–12 or add it to an existing course. The state, working with the Department of Natural Resources, provides a model curriculum by September 1, 2025. If offered, the class must follow Department of Natural Resources safety standards and be taught by a hunter education instructor certified by that department. Lessons must cover safe handling, cleaning, firearm types, and safe hunting. No real guns or live ammunition are allowed in school buildings, and students can opt out without penalty.

School course counts for hunting license

When a student completes the school firearm safety class, the state counts it as the hunter safety course. This meets the training needed to get a Michigan hunting license without taking a separate outside class.
