Fund backs Michigan Guard tuition, child care, TRICARE

The law creates a dedicated fund in the state treasury for Michigan National Guard member benefits. The state treasurer deposits money from any source, invests it, and keeps all earnings in the fund. Money left at year end does not lapse. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs runs the fund for audits. The department can spend money, if the Legislature appropriates it, to support Guard tuition help, child care help, and TRICARE premium reimbursement if that program is set in state law.

Law takes effect only with linked bills

The act takes effect only if Senate Bill 540 and Senate Bill 542 are enacted. If those bills are enacted, this act takes immediate effect at that time. Until then, the fund and benefits in this act are not active.
