Capitol sergeants become police officers

Each house can make its sergeant at arms and assistants police officers. They enforce chamber rules and Michigan law in their official role. They have the same powers and legal protections as other police. Each sergeant‑at‑arms office is a state law enforcement agency. They must meet state police training and licensing rules. Each house may let leaders or staff handle commissioning and duties under its rules.

Regular reports on Capitol security

At least once each legislative session, the House and Senate supervisors for sergeants at arms report to their oversight committees. The reports cover sergeant‑at‑arms activities, security, and decorum in each chamber.

Rules for sergeants’ police authority

Commissioned sergeants can act at the Capitol and its grounds. They can act in legislative offices, meeting or hearing sites (including a reasonable time before and after), parking areas, and nearby areas. Elsewhere in Michigan, they may protect members, a member’s family, or staff, secure official events, or investigate threats or crimes against members—but only if the Senate majority leader or House Speaker approves the member’s request. They may use these powers at sessions or off‑site only while on official sergeant‑at‑arms duty under chamber rules. When they investigate threats, they must coordinate with state or local police when practical.
