Tuition help for Guard members and family

The state now runs a tuition assistance program for Michigan National Guard members. You can use it for job training, certificates, and your first associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. You may apply before you enroll, or get reimbursed after you pay in the same academic year. The adjutant general sets one yearly amount that applies to all eligible people and approves awards only if money is available in the fund (and for reimbursements, in the member benefits fund). Payments can go to you or to your school, and only happen if the legislature appropriates money. The adjutant general may let a spouse or a dependent, stepchild, or adopted child use your benefit; children must finish high school or be 18+, and must use it before turning 26.

Rules to keep your tuition aid

If you get tuition help, you must show attendance and a semester GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. If you do not complete the course you got help for, you must repay the fund in the amount and way the adjutant general sets. You do not have to repay if you could not finish because of state or federal deployment and the adjutant general agrees.

Guard tuition fund rules and cap

The state creates a dedicated tuition assistance fund for this program. The treasurer can accept deposits, invest them, and credit earnings; the military department handles audits. The fund cannot hold more than $15 million; any extra at year-end goes to the state’s general fund. At the end of FY 2025 (September 30, 2025), any unspent, unencumbered money in the tuition fund moves to the Michigan National Guard member benefits fund.
