4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
The state classifies public water systems by size, type, and location. It sets the skills and experience operators need for each class. Public water supplies must be supervised by a properly certified operator under state rules. This helps keep drinking water safer and more reliable.
The director sets up an advisory board to help review operator exams and certifications. The board includes certified operators, a water supplier manager, a local government representative, two public members, and a state university engineering professor. A department staff member serves as a nonvoting secretary. This strengthens oversight of operator testing.
Through October 1, 2029, the department may charge fees for operator training and certification. You pay only if you take these programs or exams. The state deposits the money into the operator training and certification fund.
The department issues certificates to people who meet the rules to run water systems. It offers training and runs the certification process. Certified operators must renew and complete continuing education or show current skills. The department may suspend or revoke a certificate under rules.
