State payments help spirits vendors cover distribution
Beginning July 1, 2026, Michigan's Liquor Control Commission may pay spirits vendors $12.50 per case toward contracted warehousing and delivery costs. A case means twelve 750-milliliter bottles or an equal volume. Starting October 1, 2026, the state treasurer adjusts payments each October 1 using the prior year's inflation increase, capped at 5%. The payment is excluded from the commission's purchase cost, markup, special taxes, and state sales tax.
Vendor payments and extra aid for distributors
Spirits vendors must pay authorized distribution agents at least $1.75 for each case the Michigan Liquor Control Commission buys. Vendors and agents can agree to a higher payment; the commission and state treasurer cannot adjust the $1.75 amount. This payment is excluded from the commission's purchase cost and is not subject to its markup or state sales tax. With State Administrative Board approval, the commission may also make extra payments for reasonable, necessary warehousing, distribution, and related logistics costs. Only the commission pays this extra aid, using a cost-based method applied equally to similar agents; no amount is set.
