Michigan policyholders gain insurance pricing protections

Effective immediately, Michigan bans property and casualty insurers from using price optimization to set rates. This means pricing based on willingness to pay through adjustments unsupported by insurance risk calculations and unrelated to loss risk or expenses. The ban covers using predicted shopping, early cancellation, nonrenewal, or complaints to set such prices. It also covers estimates of willingness to pay more and measures of how consumers respond to price changes. These practices count as unfair or deceptive insurance practices under Michigan law. The law does not set a dollar amount of savings.
