Beginning July 1, 2025, publishers cannot charge the authorized publication fees for an incorrect legally required newspaper notice. This protection applies only when the person or organization requesting publication did not cause the error. It covers required summonses, orders, citations, advertisements, and notices.
Beginning July 1, 2025, Mississippi sets two fee schedules for legally required newspaper summonses, orders, citations, advertisements, and notices. Publishers may charge public bodies 12 cents per word for the first publication and 10 cents for each repeat. For other parties, publishers may charge 25 cents per word initially and 23 cents for each repeat. Those other-party rates increase annually beginning July 1, 2026, at a rate comparable to the Consumer Price Index. For billing, each group of four consecutive digits counts as one word, and any leftover digits count as another. A number with fewer than four digits, separated from other numbers by words, counts as one word. Each line of a table in a standard newspaper column counts as at least six words. The fee for preparing proof of publication, copying it, and giving a sworn statement rises from $3 to $5. These fee schedules do not apply to municipal ordinances, board of supervisors or school board proceedings, or audit reports.
