Effective upon passage, Mississippi’s law makes temporary Medicaid coverage for outpatient prenatal care easier to get. A qualified provider uses preliminary information to check whether countable net family income meets Medicaid’s limit for pregnant women. The law removes the requirement to provide proof of pregnancy and income documents for this temporary coverage. Qualified providers include county health departments, federally qualified health centers, and other federally qualified entities designated by Medicaid. Coverage starts when the provider determines eligibility. For women who apply on time, coverage lasts until Medicaid decides eligibility, without a separate 60-day cap. Medicaid must provide application forms and help with filing, and keep the application process as simple as possible.
Pregnant women can receive only one temporary Medicaid eligibility period per pregnancy. They must apply for Medicaid by the last day of the month after the provider’s temporary eligibility decision. Without an application, temporary coverage ends on that deadline, or sooner if Medicaid decides eligibility. Providers must notify Medicaid within five working days of their temporary eligibility decision and tell women about the application deadline.
