Cap on state highway miles

The law caps North Dakota’s state highway system. It cannot be longer than the smaller of 7% of all road miles or 7,700 miles (12,391.95 km). The 7% is based on total township, county, and state road miles. This limits adding roads to the state system and can change who maintains and pays for some roads.
