Road funds for non-oil townships

The State Treasurer distributes money from the county and township infrastructure fund to non-oil-producing counties. The total equals the lesser of 13% of the fund balance or $16.1 million. The money benefits both organized and unorganized townships. Each township’s share is based on its township road miles compared with the total miles across all non-oil counties. Mileage must be certified to the State Treasurer using Department of Transportation criteria under section 54-27-19.1. The county treasurer pays organized townships directly and credits unorganized township shares to a special fund for unorganized township roads.

No funds for townships without roads

A township that does not maintain any township roads is not eligible for money under this fund. Only townships that maintain at least one township road can receive a share.
