Bigger death benefit for fallen firefighters' families

North Dakota pays a $25,000 death benefit to a firefighter’s survivor when the death is in the line of duty. The Insurance Commissioner pays after a survivor asks and the fire chief or a designee provides proof. This covers city fire departments, rural fire departments, and rural fire protection districts. The Insurance Commissioner may also move up to $125,000 every two years into the fund to support these payments.
