Town clerks must keep ballots and memory cards

The law requires town clerks to preserve key election records. For federal elections, they must keep ballots, absentee ballot applications, affidavit envelopes, voter lists, and electronic counting device memory cards until any contest is settled and all appeals have expired, or at least 22 months after the election, whichever is longer. For non-federal elections, they must keep the same records until any contest is settled and all appeals have expired, or at least 60 days after the election, whichever is longer. The law takes effect 60 days after passage.
