The Secretary of State provides a simple pamphlet that explains how to get a picture ID for voting under state rules. You can use it to learn the steps to get a voter ID card.
After accepting a voter’s ID and issuing a ballot, election clerks must mark the checklist with a ruler or straight edge. The Secretary of State trains local checklist supervisors on how to use certain voter database information to verify identity. These steps standardize check-in and help officials apply the law.
The law requires you to show a government photo ID before you get a ballot, unless your identity is formally challenged. Acceptable IDs are: a New Hampshire driver’s license; a state-issued nondriver ID; a U.S. military ID; or a U.S. passport or passport card. Student IDs are not accepted. Your ID must show your name and photo and the name must closely match your voter record. It cannot be expired by more than 5 years, unless you are 65 or older. If you have been on the checklist for fewer than 63 days, you may use a driver’s license or state ID from any state; if your registration lists where you last registered, the ID must be from that state.
