Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

File with state if local clerk hours limited

Beginning 60 days after passage, candidates get another place to file. If a town or city clerk is open on fewer than 3 days a week or under 18 total hours a week, the Secretary of State also accepts filings. This applies to state representatives in single‑town or single‑ward districts and to party convention delegates. For multi‑town districts, you file with the clerk where you live (or a designated clerk); if that clerk has limited hours, the Secretary of State also takes filings.

Affidavit required to get on primary ballot

Beginning 60 days after passage, candidates for governor, councilor, state senator, and state representative must file a sworn affidavit of qualifications when they file. The affidavit states your age, that you are a registered voter, your home in the district, that you hold no incompatible office, and that you are not a federal employee if that would make you ineligible. The Secretary of State does not print your name on the primary ballot unless the affidavit is filed at that time. If you file in person with a town clerk or deputy, that clerk can witness your affidavit even if not a notary.
