How towns pick election winners

If a town has not adopted an official ballot, it must use the unofficial ballot system. Under that system, a candidate must win a majority of votes. In towns with partisan or nonpartisan official ballots, the winner is whoever gets the most votes (a plurality). These rules take effect 60 days after passage.

Towns choose ballot systems by vote

The law uses one process to adopt or switch ballot systems for town officer elections. This applies to adopting the unofficial, partisan, or nonpartisan official ballot. Towns place a yes/no question on the town meeting ballot. A majority of qualified voters who cast a ballot at the meeting must approve. The new system begins with the next town election after the vote. These procedures take effect 60 days after passage.
