Stricter mooring rules for boat owners
Beginning January 1, 2026, the law treats spuds, lifts, and similar built-in devices as moorings on waters that require a mooring permit. You cannot use these devices instead of a permitted mooring on those waters. If you secure your boat to the bottom with such gear, you must get a mooring permit and follow state mooring rules. The text provided does not list penalties or exemptions.
