New residency rules for county offices

The law requires county officials to live in the county they serve. It covers commissioners, sheriffs, county attorneys, treasurers, and registers of deeds and probate. County commissioners in Rockingham, Belknap, Grafton, Merrimack, Hillsborough, Cheshire, Sullivan, Coos, Carroll, and Strafford must also live in the district they run in at the time of election. The law takes effect upon passage. In Strafford County, current commissioners keep their constituencies and terms. There, the district-residency rule starts for the 2026 state general election, and any vacancy before then is filled under the 2024 rules.
