Stricter checks and faster decisions for child care jobs

Starting July 1, 2025, State Police run state and FBI checks, including the national sex offender registry, for child care hires. They send DHHS a criminal history report that says if the person is on the registry. DHHS must keep the information confidential. DHHS must decide if someone can work in child care within 45 days after all required information is submitted. DHHS must deny or act if the person is on a sex offender registry, or has pending charges or convictions for listed violent felonies (for example, murder, child abuse or neglect, child sexual abuse images, trafficking, spousal abuse, rape or sexual assault, kidnapping, arson, or violent assault), a drug crime in the last 5 years, or violent or sexual misdemeanors against a child. The rules apply to child day care, residential care, and child‑placing agencies.

Child care licensing fund ends

On June 30, 2025, any money left in the child care licensing fund moves to the state general fund. On July 1, 2025, the law that created the child care licensing fund is repealed. After that, there is no dedicated fund for child care licensing.
