Violent convictions anywhere can end parental rights
The law expands when a court can end a parent’s rights. It includes convictions for murder or manslaughter, and attempts, solicitations, or conspiracies to commit them. It also covers certain felony assaults that caused injury to the child, a sibling or step‑sibling, the child’s other parent, or another related person, including a minor who lived with the parent. Equivalent convictions from other states or courts also qualify. Beginning January 1, 2026, these rules apply.
