Property tax break for religious housing
Beginning July 1, 2025, religious organizations get a property tax exemption for housing used for religious purposes. This includes housing that meets the state’s workforce housing definition. To qualify, the land must be owned on or before January 1, 2025, or owned for at least five years. The property must be wholly owned by a recognized religious group organized and doing business in New Hampshire. The exemption also covers personal property used for these religious purposes, and land and buildings used for religious training, including residential programs.
Zoning can't target religious land use
Beginning July 1, 2025, towns cannot ban or single out land or buildings used mainly for religion. They may use clear, neutral rules on height, yards, lot size, setbacks, open space, and building coverage. They may also require compliance with state sewage and subdivision design rules. Any such rules must apply to all uses and cannot substantially burden religious exercise.
