Licensed guides liable for apprentices
Beginning January 1, 2026, a licensed guide age 18 or older who accompanies an apprentice is fully responsible for any damage or violations by the apprentice while guiding. This places legal and financial liability on the supervising guide.
New apprentice guide license with rules
Beginning January 1, 2026, you can apply for an apprentice hunting or fishing guide license. You must pass a criminal background check and have current first aid and CPR before applying. You may guide only when a properly licensed guide age 18 or older is with you. You can buy this apprentice license only once in your life and cannot use it as proof of a prior full license. The agency sets the fees by rule; the law lists no dollar amounts.
