Prison system can bulk-buy drugs, waive rules
The Department of Corrections can join buying groups or other deals to get medicines at lower cost. The Corrections Commissioner can waive the usual rule if needed to keep prescription services available or to avoid serious economic harm. These powers take effect 60 days after the law’s passage.
Generics required for prison prescriptions
For prescriptions paid by the Department of Corrections, pharmacists must dispense a generic equivalent. A prescriber can require a brand name if they say it is medically necessary.
