Simpler safety rules for camp cabins
The law sets special rules for summer camp cabins. A cabin qualifies if it is two stories or less, has two exits, is used no more than 150 days in any 12 months, and holds 60 people or fewer. For these cabins, officials cannot require stricter building or fire measures than this law. Plumbing and electric are not required; if installed, those systems must meet code. Cabins must have smoke detectors and handheld fire extinguishers, and sprinklers are not required. An emergency exit plan is required for every bunk, and you must show it to the state fire marshal on request. These rules apply starting 60 days after the law’s passage.
