How schools must decide transfers
Beginning July 1, 2025, for transfers inside your district, the superintendent may consider only teacher-to-student ratio and current school capacity. For transfers to a school outside your district, the superintendent must base the decision on your child’s academic, physical, personal, or social needs.
Parents get faster school transfer process
Beginning July 1, 2025, you can ask your home district superintendent to move your child to a named public, public academy, or approved private school, in or out of district. For the next school year, requests are due by July 1, unless your child has a manifest educational hardship. If you file after July 1 or seek a school outside your district, the superintendent must meet with you within 10 days. Before or at the meeting, you must name the exact school; you may bring documents or witnesses, and the superintendent may share information. If approved for a public school or public academy, districts set tuition and your home district pays it when the move is in your child’s best interest; the receiving district may waive tuition. If approved for an approved private school, the school may charge you unless it makes a tuition deal with your home district; transportation is your responsibility. If denied, you may ask your school board for a hardship hearing.
