FAFSA help for people in prison

Starting July 1, 2025, prison programming staff must give FAFSA and money-planning info by September 30 each year. The info must say aid can pay for online, trade, or vocational schools and describe aid for people lawfully present in the U.S. They must provide this during the year before release or, when a parole eligibility date is set, as part of pre-release planning. Staff must offer help to complete the FAFSA and hold at least one event in the first week of October and one in the last week of February. Help can be in person or virtual and can be built into classes, policies, or public postings. Staff must help you get needed documents, let eligible visitors like family attend events and bring papers, teach money skills, and share job leads. They must work with colleges, public libraries, and community groups to connect you with education and training. Staff cannot punish you or give perks based on whether you apply for aid or join events.

Existing prison FAFSA programs count

Beginning July 1, 2025, if the Department already runs a similar FAFSA help program, it satisfies this law. The program must keep running without major interruptions.
