Election officers can choose to volunteer

Beginning July 1, 2025, any election officer who is eligible for pay can choose to serve as a volunteer with no compensation. This covers voting, counting, and election board officers set by counties and cities, officers under the Las Vegas City Charter, and officers for Battle Mountain and Carson City airport bond elections. Local governments and boards still set pay by ordinance or resolution. This law only adds the option to decline pay and serve unpaid.

High school election trainees can volunteer

Beginning July 1, 2025, county and city clerks can appoint U.S.‑citizen high school students age 16 or older who live locally as election trainees. You must be enrolled in high school and be appointed without party affiliation. Your parent or guardian must ask the school to excuse you, and the principal or counselor must approve at least 20 days before the election. You must attend the required training and will receive a certificate with your date and hours. You cannot be required to work past 10 p.m. or your curfew. If you are eligible for pay, you can choose to serve as a volunteer with no compensation.
