More dementia support for Nevada families
Beginning July 1, 2025, Nevada's Aging and Disability Services Division must run a dementia care specialist program. It supports people with dementia, their families, and caregivers through crisis response, stabilization, and long-term care for behavioral problems. It provides information, education, and support to help people stay in their own homes or with family. It also promotes dementia-friendly communities, trains government agencies and nonprofits, and builds public awareness and support. The program must ensure access to translation and interpretation for people who cannot readily understand or communicate in English. Within available funding, the Division must seek proposals for specialist services from local government agencies or nonprofits. Within that funding, it must also partner or contract with an educational organization for specialist training and program evaluation.
Nevada allows a dementia care network
Beginning July 1, 2025, Nevada's medical schools in Las Vegas and Reno may establish the Nevada Memory Network. They must work with the state health department; the law allows, but does not require, the network's creation. If established, the network must run or contract with clinics that train primary care providers and evaluate patients they refer. Clinics must use physicians specializing in neurology, neuropsychology, and care for older adults. They must make care plans and use telehealth when necessary or convenient. The network must employ or contract with community health workers who specialize in dementia. It must also contract with community groups for crisis help, support for patients with behavioral problems, and other services.
