More discipline data from Nevada schools
Beginning July 1, 2025, every Nevada public school must collect discipline and related school data every three months. Records cover suspensions, expulsions, student placements—including temporary alternative placements—and must separate discipline data by required student groups and offense type. Schools also track staff vacancies, class sizes, counselor and other support-staff ratios, plan implementation, and teacher and administrator training. Principals must review the data, take appropriate action, and report by August 1 annually to school governing bodies, district or school heads, state education officials, and the Legislature's interim education committee. Schools must post data on their websites to the extent federal student privacy law allows.
Nevada school staff must receive behavior training
Effective July 1, 2025, Nevada districts must ensure all staff receive required training by June 30, 2030. This includes teachers, administrators, and education support staff. Training covers student behavior, positive school climate, positive behavior supports, conflict resolution, calming tense situations, and classroom management. Staff hired on or after July 1, 2030, must finish within one year; qualifying restorative justice training can count. By August 1 each year, districts must report the prior school year's training, dates, and percentage of staff attending. Reports go through the Legislative Counsel Bureau to the Legislature in even-numbered years and its interim education committee in odd-numbered years.
Statewide plan for safer Nevada schools
Beginning July 1, 2025, Nevada's education department must develop a statewide restorative justice framework, but only to the extent money is available. It guides schools in meeting student needs, reducing unequal discipline, and improving school climate and safety. It must address homeless students, students without a parent or guardian, and students in foster care. Required tools include early warnings, layered supports, positive behavior programs, school social workers, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed practices. Staff training covers child development, restorative justice, psychology, trauma, conflict resolution, and calming tense situations. The department may seek grants, gifts, and donations; the law specifies no funding amount.
Targeted help for Nevada school discipline
Beginning July 1, 2025, Nevada's education department must maintain a system addressing high or unequal student discipline. It uses discipline data to identify districts, charter schools, and university schools for profoundly gifted students needing support or corrective action. The system prioritizes help and uses proven practices, from schoolwide screening and prevention to individual student supports. Only entities directed to participate must appoint an overseer, follow an action plan with timelines and training, and engage families and community partners. They must track progress and submit annual data on discipline trends, interventions, results, and student groups. By August 1 annually, the department reports implementation and results through the Legislative Counsel Bureau to the Legislature in even-numbered years and its interim education committee in odd-numbered years.
