Wider hiring for Rockland and Orange corrections jobs

The law expands where hires can live for correction jobs in Rockland and Orange counties. Sheriff’s departments and local correctional facilities can appoint recruits, officers, corporals, sergeants, lieutenants, captains, colonels, chiefs of corrections, assistant wardens, and wardens who live in Rockland or Orange, or in any New York county that borders them. If you held one of these jobs on April 4, 2026, you do not lose the office for residency reasons if you live within 45 miles of Rockland or Orange counties, measured from the nearest county line. This makes it easier to get and keep these public safety jobs.
