More pharmacy vaccine options for adults

The health commissioner can approve more pharmacy vaccines for adults age 18 or older without the former federal advisory recommendation prerequisite. Approval requires consultation and a finding that pharmacists can safely give the vaccine within their legal scope. The vaccine must prevent a reportable disease prevalent in New York, or be recommended based on age, missing vaccine records or evidence of past infection, risk factors, or another medical reason. Pharmacists must follow individual orders or general regimens, replacing the former instruction to follow the latest federal advisory recommendations. Pharmacies must clearly display the latest adult vaccine schedule published on the state health department’s website.

Pharmacy COVID shots from age two

Licensed pharmacists can give COVID-19 shots to patients age 2 or older when a doctor or certified nurse practitioner orders them. Orders and regimens must follow state health rules and law. For children ages 2 through 18, pharmacists can use individual orders or general vaccination regimens. The health commissioner can issue a statewide general regimen when a COVID-19 outbreak exists or poses an imminent threat.

State vaccine guidance for young families

Effective immediately, New York’s health commissioner sets childhood vaccine standards through state regulations. These rules must use accepted medical standards and consider advice from recognized medical and scientific groups. Newborn vaccine schedules follow state health department recommendations rather than the former federal advisory reference. Social services districts must give public assistance applicants and recipients with a child age 5 or younger vaccine information and age-appropriate schedules. Those schedules must follow state health recommendations and include the county health department’s phone number.
