Smithtown lets one nonprofit file late exemption

The law lets the Town of Smithtown assessor accept a late property tax exemption application from Tiegerman Community Services, Inc. The request covers 10 Lordly Court for the 2023–2024 assessment rolls. If accepted, the application is treated as filed on time. The assessor must find the group would have qualified and needs town board approval to fix the roll. If the exemption is granted, the town or tax office can refund taxes already paid and cancel any unpaid taxes, fines, penalties, liens, and interest.
