Essex hotel tax money restricted to tourism

The law puts all hotel and motel tax money into the Essex County general fund. The county legislature decides how to allocate it. The county may keep up to 5% to run the tax. After that, every dollar must go only to promote tourism and to economic development that supports tourism across the county and its cities, towns, and villages. The county must follow federal, state, and county procurement rules when it spends this money. This change does not change the tax rate and takes effect immediately.
