More PE and daily recess for K-5

Beginning July 1, 2026, public elementary schools must give full-day kindergarten and grades 1–5 at least 60 minutes of physical education each week. Recess time does not count toward PE. Schools must also provide an extra 60 minutes each week of physical activity, separate from PE and recess; districts choose the mix and consider each school's Healthy and Fit School Advisory Committee. Every school day must include 40 minutes of supervised, unstructured recess, which may be two 20-minute breaks and cannot be withheld as punishment. Students in in-school suspension, detention, or similar in-school discipline may be excluded from PE.

Stronger PE standards and state guidance

Beginning July 1, 2026, the State Board of Education adopts rules and sets PE standards that align with national standards. Each week, at least 50% of PE class time is active at a moderate or vigorous level, where practicable. Standards must be inclusive, with adapted instruction for students with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Each district must set clear goals for its PE curriculum. The Board also sends guidance to districts on PE benefits and strongly encourages PE in grades 6–12 and short activity breaks, clubs, and special events.
