Beginning Nov 1, 2026, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board can set how far groundwater wells must be from each other, by basin or subbasin. These rules tie to water permits and can limit where you drill or slow new well approvals. The Board must hold at least one public hearing in or near each affected basin before adopting spacing rules. The Board can also count spacing when it sets a basin’s maximum yearly water limit, which can change permit amounts.
