New spacing rules for groundwater wells

Beginning November 1, 2026, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board can set minimum distances between groundwater wells by rule. It does this when it sets a basin’s maximum annual yield and allocates water by regular or temporary permits. The Board may set spacing that is different for each basin or subbasin. This can limit where new wells go and affect access for local well owners. The law also removes the old rule that required at least one local public hearing before adopting spacing rules.
