24-hour police reporting for school abuse
Beginning July 1, 2026, every public and private school employee must report to local law enforcement within 24 hours when they learn or reasonably believe a student was sexually abused, assaulted, or subjected to sexual misconduct. Local law enforcement must be an agency independent from the school; school resource officers are used only if that agency directs them. If an SRO is used, the officer must file a written report with the independent agency. Schools must notify police before doing formal interviews or discipline, unless police say an immediate school response is needed to protect students. Police must keep the reporter’s identity confidential, except by court order or during a police or state education investigation. Each year, all public and private school employees must sign a statement acknowledging this duty. Not signing does not remove the duty or protect against criminal charges.
Parents copied on student messages from staff
Beginning July 1, 2026, public and charter school staff must include a student's parent or guardian on direct electronic messages. You do not need to copy the parent when using a school‑approved platform for school or academic matters. In an emergency, you may contact the student first, but you must notify the parent soon after. Schools should use approved platforms that can auto‑copy parents when available. If a staff member is reported for breaking this rule, the district places them on administrative leave while it investigates. If sexual or unlawful behavior is involved, the school must notify local police right away. The State Department of Education provides training so staff understand and follow these rules.
