Higher fees for serving court papers

Effective upon passage, Rhode Island raises the maximum fee, including mileage, for serving most writs, citations, or subpoenas. The cap rises from $45 to $70 per service; actual charges may be lower. The fee schedule applies to deputy sheriffs, town sergeants, and constables. Separate maximums are $100 for serving replevin writs or out-of-state papers and $100 for arrest writs or body attachments. The schedule also caps writ copies at $2 per 100 words and returned writs at $15 when defendants cannot be found. These fees go into Rhode Island's general revenue.
