State employee protections for disaster workers

Rhode Island gives qualifying disaster response workers state-employee protections when no other law provides benefits. This covers authorized workers using professional, mechanical, or other skills while performing response duties during a disaster emergency. They receive workers’ compensation rights and legal defense protections through the state Attorney General. Paid workers and volunteers can qualify when responding in Rhode Island under state or local government orders or requests. The law takes effect upon passage.
