Beginning July 1, 2025, the law authorizes North Kingstown to offer a $200 property tax credit by ordinance. The town may instead reduce taxable property value enough to provide the same tax savings. This relief is for Gold Star parents whose child died in the line of duty while serving in the U.S. armed forces. The credit is available only if the town adopts an ordinance providing it.
Beginning July 1, 2025, North Kingstown’s authorized senior tax relief changes from exempting up to $30,000 of home value. The replacement is a $450 tax credit or a reduction in taxable home value worth the same tax savings. Applicants must be over 65, own and occupy the home, and have their permanent home in town when applying. Town rules may require up to 20 years of residency, with ownership and title throughout the required period. The council may adjust the credit and residency rules. Shared owners get only one exemption, but this relief adds to other credits and exemptions they qualify for. Tax savings can rise or fall compared with the old exemption, depending on the prior exemption and town tax rate.
Beginning July 1, 2025, North Kingstown may provide a $200 property tax credit by ordinance instead of a $10,000 value exemption. The town may instead reduce taxable property value enough to provide the same tax savings. Veterans must meet the state’s qualifying military service and discharge requirements; unmarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans also qualify. Compared with the old exemption, savings can rise or fall depending on the tax rate and property assessment.
Beginning July 1, 2025, North Kingstown may offer real property tax credits to legally blind people by ordinance. It may instead reduce taxable property value enough to provide the same tax savings. Applicants must meet federal blindness standards, certified by a licensed doctor or Rhode Island Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The law sets no credit amount, and relief depends on the town adopting an ordinance.
