Two syphilis tests required during prenatal care
Rhode Island requires physicians, midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners providing prenatal care to collect two blood samples. The first is due within 30 days after the first professional prenatal visit; the second is due during the third trimester. Both samples must go to the state health department laboratory or a department-approved laboratory for syphilis testing. Violations are misdemeanors, and offending physicians face fines of $10 to $100 for each offense. The law took effect upon passage.
