New Hellenic association plates for drivers

Effective six months after passage, the law authorizes Rhode Island's DMV to offer American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association plates. The association designs the standard-size plates with DMV, and State Police must approve the design. The association handles the initial order and must meet minimum prepaid orders for each plate type before submitting production paperwork. DMV sets prepayment and other needed procedures, including required payments. Drivers must remove and return their original plates, keep the same registration number, and carry their registration certificate.

Extra costs for Hellenic association plates

Drivers choosing these association plates pay $40 extra at issuance, on top of regular registration fees. Of that charge, $20 goes to Rhode Island's general fund and $20 goes annually to the association. Each later renewal costs $10 extra, which goes to the association. The association must use Rhode Island-sourced money to benefit Rhode Island charities and submit an annual accounting before funds are distributed. Drivers get no refund for canceling these plates early.
