More overdose protections for people under supervision

Effective upon passage, Rhode Island extends overdose-related legal protections to people on bail, probation, or parole. The law protects against violations based on drug or drug-item possession, underage alcohol possession or transport, or running drug-involved premises. Evidence must come from seeking medical help or from the overdose and need for help. Protections cover both the person seeking help and the person experiencing the overdose. Existing protection from criminal charges for these offenses remains in place for drug- or alcohol-related overdoses or medical emergencies. Providing first aid or other medical help can also count in a person's favor in a controlled-substance prosecution.
